Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Doctors of Chiropractic – often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians – practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through clinical examinations, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate. Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the healthcare team.

Recently a patient came in panicking about a sharp pain in his right upper back under his shoulder blade; it felt like an ice pick when he would take a deep breath. Also the pain radiated up into his lower neck and down the back of his arm. AND he was leaving on a 2 week trip to Europe 3 days later! After determining the problem, 3 days of treatment got him to go on his trip pain free.

A 63 year old man had suffered for 10 months with front thigh pins & needles and pain that became worse upon standing. He is a security officer and has to direct traffic on weekends. Dr. Newman pinpointed and treated the pinched nerve and he had instant relief – the pain when he arrived that day was significant – immediately after the adjustment, he was amazed at the absence of the pain! His wife cried with happiness! After 3 weeks of treatment he is doing very well.

Emily was hurting. She left a voicemail that she needed to see the doctor and we were able to get her in right away. During the examination she complained of constant pain down her right leg. The doctor was able to quickly assess the source of the pain which was a subluxation in her lower lumbar. He adjusted the vertebrae and she was surprised that the pain was gone immediately. She sent an email over the weekend expressing her thanks. We continued her treatment to reinforce the correction but she was thrilled that her leg was so much better.

A young male ballet dancer was experiencing difficulty as he could only perform a pirouette to the right and not to the left. Dr. Newman assessed not only his spine but the alignment of his musculature and with one quick adjustment the dancer could immediately pirouette to the left!

Dr. Newman is the best chiropractor that I have ever been to. I had a pain going down my left shoulder for over a year and I tried everything and he was the only one that can fix my problem. I am now pregnant and going to him for care and he is absolutely wonderful. I have known the doc for many years and I don’t know what I would do without him. I highly recommend that if you need a chiropractor and you’re in pain to go to Dr. Newman for care. Thank you Doc for always making me feel better!
